This self-care poetry excerpt is for anyone who shows up for everyone but themselves. It’s a reminder that your pain matters, your healing matters, and your love for yourself is not optional but essential.
The mind can't keep up with the distress your eyes see and the anguish your body feels
All your wounds are open and exposed
But to the naked eye they are sutured and closed
It's a dilemma
You are always saving yourself
You are becoming the first responder
A first responder is the initial person on the scene to help
A first responder is reliable, level-headed, and acts quick when pain is felt
But why don't you?
You're not reliable
Sometimes you can't afford to let yourself feel, not just financially but circumstantially
We block our own path with half-hearted healing
You're not level-headed
You treat other people the way you want to be treated
But when they don't treat you the same, you're defeated
Treat yourself the way you treat them but don't be conceited
You need to nourish and love yourself even when you feel it is not needed
There is always something to love within, just find it and keep it
You're not quick
You put things off for tomorrow
But when tomorrow becomes today and you run out of yesterdays
You're going to wish you took advantage of today
Instead of being in the grave
Save yourself
You can't always expect others to give you what you need
But you don't need to keep everything inside with greed, instead sow your own seeds
Each plant has different needs
They lie dormant through seasons, become tangled in weeds
But still, they grow despite what impedes
Perennials beautifully return every year
Just like them, soon enough you will notice that you've grown
Give yourself time to blossom, let others marvel at how you bloom
If you are not there now, trust me you will get there soon
There is no need for me to even stop to ponder
Because I believe in you, first responder
